Charlie Puth shared how Elton John’s harsh criticism of his 2019 music inspired him to be more honest when writing songs.

I met him at Craig’s, the restaurant, and he came up to me and said, “Hi, how are you?” Charlie remembers. I’m like, ‘You’re Elton John.’

The four-time Grammy nominee said Elton told him, “Yeah, I am.” You know your music sucked in 2019, it wasn’t good.

Charlie added: “And it was like a punch, but I had thought about that too.” I had been through a messy breakup and I think that went hand in hand too.

“And it was kind of a wake-up call, a bit. I was a bit in denial,” he admitted.

Charlie and singer Charlotte Lawrence dated for seven months in 2019 before calling it quits.

After the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the artist said he was able to “sit down with a new way of making music.”

“And it was like a punch, but I had thought about that too,” he said.

He said, “I decided I would never release a song again if it wasn’t the truth.”

Although Charlie didn’t specify which songs Elton didn’t like, he released three singles in 2019, including I Warned Myself, Mother and Cheating on You.
