10 New and Notable Minute Maid Park Foods, Ranked

Baseball is back. The Houston Astros play their first home game on Monday, April 18 against the Los Angeles Angels.

“America’s Pastime” is known for being a sport that many people watch as much for the food and vibes as for the game itself. Luckily, Minute Maid Park in Houston has plenty of dining options, including new items for the season. Tex-Mex institution El Tiempo is also unveiling a location in the stadium.

This year marks chef Scott Strickland’s first as executive chef of Minute Maid, replacing Jimmy Coatsworth, now managing director of Aramark, who oversees food at the stadium. Strickland describes himself as “a great home cook” and says he wanted to donate food to Minute Maid that people could also recreate at home.

We’ve ranked 10 foods at Minute Maid Park from least favorite (10) to must-have (1).

10. House smoked turkey

This item consists of two thick slices of turkey drizzled with barbecue sauce. It was nicely smoked (after being brined for 48 hours) and tasted perfect, but there wasn’t much other than meat. Personally, this didn’t thrill me, but I’m sure it will make many turkey lovers happy.

9. Crawford Sausage

This hot dog is made with sausage from Slovacek’s, a Czech supplier based in Snook, Texas. It is topped with finely chopped onions that have been braised in Karbach’s Crawford Bock beer. The deliciously flavorful onions made the dish, the sausage was good but a little hard to eat – I prefer a seamless bite in a chewy dog and bun. Overall solid, but not memorable compared to other dishes.

8. Fried Bread Pudding

Easy to eat off a stick, this pudding ball had lots of cinnamon flavor, warm raisins inside, and a moist texture (I always say that as a compliment, as a dry food hater). Chef Strickland says they make the hot dog buns fresh daily, and in order not to waste any buns, use day-old ones to make the bread pudding. This dish gets extra points for its no-waste mission.

7. Crawford Dog

This hot dog contains two sausages, split and then grilled, served on a hamburger potato roll rather than a hot dog bun. The mix of sweet and savory condiments is what sold me here: mustard mixed with a bacon and onion jam made with Crawford Bock beer. A nice twist on a classic.

6. Tostitos Rolling Nachos

A version of dorinachos, these walking nachos in a bag showed promise in theory, but didn’t quite work in practice. First of all, I don’t understand why they are called “tostitos” but are made with Doritos Dinamita chips, but whatever. These nachos are supposed to be good walking food, but Dinamita chips are too lean to pick up the meat properly. Eating them with a plastic fork also proved difficult, as the fries are too crispy. I really wanted to like it, and it was good – except the Dinamitas got a little mushy – but the food infrastructure is important.

5. Pasteur Pork Nachos

A more classic version of nachos, but sometimes the OG works really well. The pork pastor was flavorful, the dish was overall well executed and had a good mix of everything from the pickled jalapeños cutting through the richness of the queso blanco to the kind of tortilla chips that fit the scoop.

4. Homemade smoked chicken on a potato

I love a loaded baked potato, and this one hit the spot. The shredded chicken is deeply smoky and flavorful, the sour cream and shredded cheddar cheese add extra punch, and it all pairs well with the potato flesh. No complaints.

3. Pastrami Sandwich

Chef Strickland says making this pastrami sandwich is a two-week process, between brining the brisket which gives it a pickle flavor and smoking it. The meat in this sandwich is nice and chewy with crumbly edges, avoiding the typical pastrami pitfall of being too dry. The three layers of rye bread provide good support for the filling, which pairs well with the coleslaw and old-fashioned mustard.

2. The Pineapple Dog

This hot dog has it all: sweet, tangy, smoky and spicy. It’s a tribute to Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel, whose nickname is “La Piña” for her gravity-defying spiky hair. Chef Strickland admits this item will be like a pineapple pizza: you either hate it or love it. I’m Team Pineapple and was thrilled with this hot dog. The team toss the piña in honey and Tajin, then smoke it. Pineapple chunks sit on a bun covered in a teriyaki-soy sauce glaze, alongside a long dog and candied jalapeños that provide warmth.

Asian nachos at Minute Maid Park

1. Asian Nachos

Drumroll… My absolute favorite item was the Asian nachos. Instead of tortilla chips, perfectly crispy, suitably greasy fried wonton strips are used as a prep aid. They’re layered with pulled pork and strings of pickled carrots, drizzled with teriyaki glaze and sweet chili aioli, then topped with black and white sesame seeds. Perfection.
